Beach Soccer News: Soccer in the Sand
Soccer in the Sand is a fun-filled, two-day beach soccer event held on Coronado Cays opposite the Loews Hotel.
The two day, small sided, 5v5 soccer tournament is played in the sand with goalkeepers and offers loads of fast paced action and lots of goals. The event is fun to play in and fun to watch and is a great family event for all ages.
The Man Behind Soccer in the Sand: Chris Lemay
Chris Lemay is an accomplished coach and business person. This year, Lemay was honored as Coach of the Year by San Diego Surf Soccer Club, his girls team won State Cup and he is in the 5th year of hs very popular beach soccer tournament; Soccer in the Sand. The beach tournament grows every year. Last year, there were an estimated 100 teams participating representing local area competitive soccer clubs.
According to Lemay, “We anticipate having over 150 teams participating on June 4th and 5th. The players and their families will enjoy the best atmosphere at a venue that is unmatched! Along with the fast paced beach soccer we will have a live DJ and fun and exciting vendors for all the participants and spectators to enjoy!”
The beach soccer tournament takes place at Coronado Cays In San Diego. The address of the beach fields are 3700 Silver Strand Blvd., Coronado, CA 92118 Every team participating plays a minimum of 3 games. The entire family is encouraged to come and enjoy the games and the beach. This is one soccer tournament you won’t have to drag the siblings to.
Soccer in the Sand Tournament Format: Games will be 4v4 plus goalkeepers (5v5). Games will consist of three 11 minute periods with 2 minute breaks. All teams will be guaranteed 3 bracket games with the opportunity to advance to the semifinals and finals. Minimum roster count is 5 and maximum is 11 - Our recommendation is 7-9 players. AGE DIVISIONS: U9-U18 boys and girls.
This is the third year Soccer in the Sand is being co-hosted with the San Diego Surf Soccer Club.
Last year was the first time Soccer in the Sand was held on Coronado and Lemay said, "The new location on Coronado was terrific. The sand fields were great, the beach access perfect and the state parks people were awesome.” Lemay continued, "The entire experience was wonderful and I hope we exceeded everyone's expectations. Having the ability to swim in the ocean always makes a soccer tournament terrific."
